Photographer’s Rights
In the last day or so there have been several stories on local news media involving the use of cell phone cameras to capture videos. In the case last night, the video showed a shop owner detaining a robbery suspect at gun point. In turns out the suspect was arrested. BTW, his armed accomplice was shot and killed by the restaurant owner. The report was that no charges were being filed against the owner.
I’m not going to address sanity of photographer taking a video of an armed robbery in progress in the city of Philadelphia. He probably doesn’t read the homicide statistics very closely.
In regard to the photographer, what are his rights to take the video? One interview with a Villanova journalism professor even described “citizen journalism” where everyone with a cellphone can be a video journalist. Professional journalists/ photographers understand their rights and the rights of their subjects, but do you?
Here is an interesting blog entry with a link to “Photographers Right” downloadable file. I guess everyone ( with a cellphone camera) today should read this.
