Too Much Data in the Car
You can see from my previous post I love my Garmin C340 in-car GPS unit. With the voice directions announcing turns including street names, it seems to be only a slight distraction to the task at hand – driving the car. In fact compared to hunting for a street or location, it probably reduces the distraction level and thus improving safety.
However, today there was a posting on the O’Reilly Radar from the Web 2.0 Summit that is making me REALLY nervous. The posting concerns the upcoming “GPS” product called Dash. For all us techies it sounds really great. Ad Hoc networking for traffic, live internet searches, etc, etc. But how much is too much! We are still driving a car that takes most of 2 hands, a leg and more concentration than many can muster. After the recent story on the local TV news about teens texting while driving, I really wonder where all this is leading!
