Do the Wave for Science and Math Education
By now most people have seen the statistics on America’s and South Carolina’s ranking in science and mathematics education.
* The United States ranks 22nd in science and 30th in math. (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development)
* In 2009, eighth graders in South Carolina scored lower than eighth graders in 30 other states on standardized tests in the areas of math and science. (Institute of Education Sciences)
* 80% of all jobs created in the next decade will require math and science skills. (National Science Foundation)
South Carolina has launched a Do the Wave revolution to increase awareness and support for Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM)
The movement is being lead by the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM). GSSM is a 128 student residential high school in Hartsville, SC. The purpose of GSSM is to provide for the education of the scientifically astute leaders vital to the development of the economy of the state.
