Hayden Speech – Podcast
Here is one of the best podcast sources anywhere! Clark Boyd researches BBC audio each week and assembles a couple of podcasts each week on the broad topic of technology.
Podcast #80 is an excellent example of the real power of podcasting vs broadcast audio. In this podcast Clark provides extended excerpts of the speech by Micheal Hayden at the National Press Club. Hayden is the past director of the National Security Agency and his speech addresses the current controversy on international communication eavesdropping.
For the first time we are hearing some intelligent (poor pun) comments. The normal media discourse on this topic is like a group of blind men debating the merits of a Rembrandt painting. Now we have someone (Hayden) with eyes. Unfortunately, in previous debates the people with eyes have said “trust us” to the blind and then not lived up to the trust. Now when the stakes literally involve the safety of the entire nation, we are reaping the harvest of previous “trust me” failures.
