Online Social Networks are Really Hot!
Of course, it is not new news to everyone that is reading this blog that
online social networks are hot. So, why am wasting your time stating the obvious.
Public libraries are SERIOUSLY considering the ramifications of all this
stuff!
Consider the following 2 items at American Library Association Mid-winter convention in Seattle. (Man, only librarians would go to Seattle in mid-winter for a convention??) BTW, OCLC is Online Computer Library Center. Note: the convention link is a wiki!!
OCLC Symposium: Who’s Watching YOUR Space?
Hear what three experts have to say about social networking in this symposium moderated by Michael Stephens, Instructor, Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University and author of Web 2.0 & Libraries: Best Practices for Social Software. They are:
- Howard Rheingold, a leading thinker on the cultural, social and
political implications of communications media and virtual communities - Marc Smith, Senior Research Sociologist, who leads the Community
Technologies Group at Microsoft Research - danah boyd, PhD candidate at the School of Information at the
University of California, Berkeley and Fellow at the University of Southern
California’s Annenberg Center for Communications
8:00 – 10:00 am, Sheraton Seattle, Metropolitan B Room
Social
Networking: Best Practices for Libraries
Join an interactive discussion about library social networking experiences. Hear about successes and failures, and discuss privacy, security and community-building that surround social networking for libraries.
Checkout that OCLC site when you get a chance, lots of interesting stuff. Not everyone has the advantage of computers and wideband access at home. Our public libraries provide a great service and are the soul of a true democracy!
