Malware beyond our jursidiction?

One malaise I often hear is that there is so much malware propagation because
the host sites are off shore in countries that don’t have strong laws, and
ineffective, uninterested or corrupt law enforcement. The often cited bottomline
is don’t bother it’s a waste of time and energy to try and go after the bad
guys.

Well the Sophos’s Security Threat Report 2007 (as reported in the Register) shoots a pretty big hole in the
above rationalization. It turns out that the US hosts 34.2% of malware sites
detected last year. China is close at 31% and Russia at 9.5%.

So here’s the new bottomline – Cleanup our own house and we’d have one third
less malware!

BTW, we also lead the world in spam relaying but that’s attributed to wide
spread unprotected PC use i.e. lazy consumers!
