News?

From time to time one hears a lament that everyone is under informed, or the only news is from TV. Often there is the dire prediction on the future of newspapers. So where do I get my news? I sat down recently and thought of the sources for my news. I am only counting daily sources, magazines and other less frequent sources of information are not counted. So here they are (chronological order);
# Local TV – morning news
# National Public Radio (every time in the car, about 1 hr per day)
# Google News
# Bloglines – Register, Wired News, Gizmodo etc
# Local TV – evening news usually local, not network

Uninformed; well maybe but you can judge. But there is one characteristic typical of all these sources – their length. Unlike a classical newspaper article (US Today excepted, they are hardly a classical newspaper) all these sources tend to be more short summaries rather than true articles. Thus, my true lament – the demise of the time to sit and really read something. My brain has become a skimmer of information. It takes me a hours to shift modes. I say this because even in the evening when I might have the time to read in depth often my brain is running at daytime speed. Where I am most often able to make the shift is while traveling by airplane. Being “stuck” in an airport is no longer an annoyance but rather an opportunity for my brain to shift and read a book. So where do you get your news? If you are like me and look fondly at opportunities to slow down and absorb information. Then cherish the opportunities to get “stuck” in this fast moving world.
