Interesting Books
Last year I picked up the British and US “run away†best seller ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves’ by Lynne Truss. For anyone interested in the English language, the vagaries of punctuation or punctuation history, this is a fascinating little book. Highly recommended.
During a recent trip to the UK I came across an equally charming book that is the mirror of Lynne’s book. ‘Eats, Shites and Leaves’ by A. Parody. This book is equally intriguing for it’s examples of bad and confounding English.
For example, read he following sentence aloud. I defy anyone to explain the relationship between the correct spelling and pronunciation. Yet, this is English.
A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed.
Pickup both books, their…oops they’re great.
