Engineering Management Hacks
Another one from Tim O’Reilly’s blog
It starts with this great quote
If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (attributed)
Very interesting discussion on managing engineering development teams at Google.
What is interesting is that I have heard Jack Welch state some similar thoughts in a pre-web domain. Fundamentally, it boils down to successful projects have a 110% committed champion and the champion rallies the team to succeed. In his post, Marc Hedlund brings this concept into 21st century with social software tools. In the “Soul of a New Machine” Tracy Kidder explained basically the same process a generation ago at Data General Corp.
